Who We Are

The Sanctuary is a playground for creative action and artful living. Housed in the Arcata Women’s Club historic building, the Sanctuary is a space dedicated to making and experiencing art in community. We produce gallery exhibitions, live music, community events, workshops and much more. Our printmaking lab, ceramics studio, garden, reference library, communal kitchen, general workshop, sewing studio, great hall and stage serve as venues for creative community-building and sustainable-living. The Sanctuary is a project of Creative Sanctuary, a 501c3 nonprofit, incorporated September 4, 2015. Despite this recent incorporation date, the Sanctuary has been an active element in the community for the past two years, thriving in the shared efforts of volunteers, artists, and our dedicated neighbors.

What Our Audience Has To Say

In our last survey, we asked Sanctuary frequenters: How has your life changed since coming here? One person wrote “I say ‘hi’ to people when walking down the street, because I know them now.” This simple statement affirms our aspiration to catalyze the growth of a vibrant, connected community through daily acts of sharing food, music, art, and education. We also asked respondents to comment on what they had learned at the Sanctuary. Responses ranged from “beekeeping, sewing and ceramics,” “how to sing!,” and “screen printing,” to “I’ve learned about my neighbors” and “I’ve learned how good it feels to be among friendly/accepting people.” A final survey respondent wrote, “The Sanctuary has sustained my continued interest in being a resident and member of Arcata.” By offering affordable resources to artists, and by enlivening our facilities with local and national artists, the Sanctuary aims to increase Humboldt County’s ability to house artists in a long term sense.
